Group CEO of Optimus Cards Group
JULIE WILSON | Optimus Cards Group
The best thing about your career/work
So many things, making the inconceivable a reality, breaking down the barriers, challenging the difficult and watching my teams go from strength to strength but never losing the group ethos or the passion. The best thing of all is that I still laugh every day.
Why you think being out is important
I spent years hiding, pretending and lets face it, lying! Once I was out I felt free, relieved and whole.
Your own inspirational role model
Michael Cashman and Ruth Hunt. Without Stonewall I don’t believe I could have got married and enjoy the equality I do today. (I have become a Stonewall Ambassador to help endorse their valuable work).
How and what was the reaction to you coming out
I did receive homophobic comments from peers, but I soon realised that they thought it meant there was a weakness that they could exploit - My senior director said ‘ bloody marvellous I prefer woman too ’put his arm around me and took me to the Pub - I did have some tough times, mainly through self doubt and insecurity but in the end it made me stronger and more determined to succeed. I simply refused to let my sexuality become a blocker to the boardroom.
